Windows 7 taskbar and screen saver?

I have two questions about Windows 7:

1) The taskbar in Vista would view the screen of an icon (ex: would view what website I'm on). Is there a way I can update this feature?

2) For my screen saver, it gives a message like "The screen saver can't run because it requires a newer video card or one that's compatible with Direct3D". I Just bought a new desktop a couple months ago with a really good graphics card :S.

I'm a newbie to this...forgive my ignorance lol|||To answer both of your questions:

it might have been because your Windows Aero scheme has been forcibly turned off. Re-enable it and see if the problem is solved. Here's how:

Start ---> Right Click on "Computer" --->

"Properties" ---> "Advanced System Settings" (on the left) --->

Click on "Advanced tab"--->

Under "Performance," click on "Settings"

You want to choose either:

---Let Windows choose what's best

or

---Adjust for best appearance

Hit OK and see if it is fixed.

------------------------------------

Here's an explanation as to why this has happened:

Direct3D is a standard used for applications to communicate with the graphics card in your PC. The message that you receive usually only apply to old graphic cards--and by "old," I mean something like 5+ years ago.

Now, because you said that you've just bought your "new desktop a couple months ago with a really good graphic card" (quoted you), that means the graphic card is NOT the problem; the problem lies somewhere in your settings.

You might have messed with your computer's graphic interface settings somehow, most likely because you've downloaded and played some graphic-intensive games recently. Well, whatever it was, it seems to have forced Windows Aero color scheme to shut off.

So, to solve it, you'll need to turn it on again.|||To question 1: Windows 7 does this too... unless you are talking about the text. If you want to see the text, right-click the taskbar, click properties, and in taskbar buttons click the drop down option combine when taskbar is full.

To question 2: This is strange... you probably need to update the video driver. I can help you do this if you ask me on my website. http://thepctechguy.webs.com/contactthep…

P.S. please report lovergirl9304's answer; answer is totally unrelated, is spam, and kind of what you expect in chain mail.

Upgrading from XP to Windows 7 on a Netbook?

I have decided to upgrade from windows xp home edition to windows 7 x32bit on my vaio W netbook/laptop. I have already upgraded my ram from 1GB to 2GB, and my system specifications exceed the basic system requirements. Because i'm installing from XP, i will have to do a 'clean install' i believe?

my question is, will i have to individually re install all my drivers software for hardware (like webcam, sound, video card ect...) and programms?? or will Windows 7 do this for me?|||You will have to reinstall all of your programs and some of your drivers. And yes, you have to do a clean install.|||If your netbook isn't like >10 years old or anything, Windows 7 should have all the drivers. Upgrading to Vista pre-SP1 is another thing, but Win 7 generally fixed the hardware-incompatibility issue. Just install, run some windows update, and voila.

Sadly, you must do a clean install and reinstall all your programs =/|||download vista tranform pack 4 from http://www.softroof.com/7tp/temp.htm

Help with finding drivers for video card!?!?!?

So I recently got Windows 7 and I keep getting a error saying I need to update my video drivers. I have no idea what drivers I need and I am worried about getting the wrong ones. So if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great. Here are the specs I believe you would need.

Windows 7 Generic Drivers vs Manufacturer?

I just installed Win 7 RTM, and all my drivers are working, is there any benefit to installing the manufacturer driver. For example, should I install the video card driver?|||If you can get a Windows 7 specific driver from the manufacturer, then you should, especially if you have x64 and they offer an x64 driver. The advantage is that you know that you'll have a driver written for your specific hardware in your specific OS. The generic one may have some significant deficiencies...

_|||The video driver from the manufacturer might give you more resolution and software options, but if you are happy with what you have, you don't need to install it at all.|||Hey,

Some drivers MUST be installed from the manufacturer website

However, some drivers are native with win 7

I think there is not any benefit if you install them from the manufacturer website, except the required ones

Video Card Assement in Windows 7.?

I have a BFG 8800 GTX 768MB OC2 and I am on windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, My score is only a 6.4 this seems horrible to me. My processor and Ram / Memory score a 7.3 np and I am ok with that they are in the 7 range. My question is what is the best / single highest scoring video card in Windows 7? I was looking at buying a Nvidia 295 but I think I want to wait for there GT300 coming out sometime in this lifetime from what I read online :( I don't care if the card takes up two slot spaces but it can only take up one PCIE slot I do not want to SLI no questions asked.|||The 295 is fine...you should probably wait some more so you get a card with DirectX -11 support if your only incentive to getting a new card is the Windows Rating. White screen on login, Windows 7. How to fix it? (Possible video card issue)?

I have an acer 5943G running windows 7 home premium SP1 64-bit.

My video card is ATI Radeon HD 5850.

My screen works fine during the boot up and "Starting Windows" screen, however when it gets to the login screen (welcome screen) the whole screen goes white. Windows logs in and continues to run in the background and I get all my normal sounds from programs asking me for an internet connection... The only work around I have at the moment is to close and open the laptop (put it in and out of sleep mode). When I open it, the screen is back on and working fine.

How can I fix this?

It used to be that the screen was black, but after taking it in for fixing for the 3rd time, it was a white screen instead.

Extra info, in the past youtube would sometimes show HD vids in green and then give me the blue screen of death after a little white noise. The blue screen and white noise has stopped after fixing, I sometimes still get the odd green video. This leads me to think it is a video card issue rather than a boot issue.|||can be different reasons, And i don't think its hardware issue, have you tried to install new themes, or software, if so try to restore to earlier time, you can also try to update your video card driver.

a good video card :P|||You can use any PCIe video card. But you may need to upgrade your power supply. You'll need a minimum of 400-450watts to power pretty much any decent video card. Also, make sure the power supply has at least 1 6-pin PCIe connector. This is required to be plugged into the back of the video card, without it the card won't power up. I believe the HP Pavilion p6210f has a 300 watt power supply.

Power supplies are cheap, you can get a good 500 watt (although over 500 watts would be recommend, but not necessary) for under $60.

However, be aware that some video cards are large and my not fit in your computer case.

Since the minimum is a 6600GT, go with a GeForce 9 series card (or ATI equivalent) at the very least.

Something like an Nvidia GeForce 9800GT (or GTX) or an ATI Radeon HD 4830 (or 4850).

I mean, you can go lower than that, but you can run pretty much any game with either of those cards.

If you can afford it, go even higher than those cards, because you'll be ensuring that you can power some games released over the next 2 years or so.

Just make sure it'll fit (physically) in your computer case. So don't go for any OC (overclocked) edition cards.

By the way... I have that monitor, it's awesome hahaha.

Thanks|||I don't see why you would want to upgrade your graphics card with that computer, but anyways, if it has a PCI-express slot, I would recommend something low-profile like the ATI Radeon 5450 or the 5570 since the P4 would more than likely weigh down the GPU's performance boost. I don't know of any Australian retailers though, so I'm not exactly sure how you would go about obtaining them.

Good luck.|||get ATI HD 4670

How do i reinstall the driver for my video card?

I'm having problems with my PC and my friend told me that i need to reinstall the driver for my video card.

good luck|||you have to find the right size and model for it. Then unscrew the driver, make sure you touch your fingers on metal surface first as it can cause electric estatitics.|||hi,

to check the video card details type devmgmt.msc in run and press enter to open your device manager.

Now open the Display Adapters category and you will see the name of display adapter.

Now check for the update at the manufacturer site if you are not able to get updates there then you can try the driver updating applications like Driver Detective, Driver Agent or Advanced Driver Optimizer they will get you the latest updates 4 ur drivers so u dont have to search them they will download the latest updates and will install them .

u can try there trial version to see if they show updates. I prefer Advanced Driver Optimizer as with it I have to just scan and can update all my drivers in single click just a best optimizer for driver.

The best part is if it installed incorrect driver then I can roll back using their restore facility.

Should i get windows 7 32-bit or windows 7 64-bit?

is all that supposed to run on windows 7 32-bit or windows 64-bit and why?|||32 BIt WIndows 7 uses upto 4gb of memory. I wouldn't go to 64bit unless 1) You have to use more than 4GB, 2) You have a necessity to run 64bit apps.

32bit apps generally run slower under a 64bit OS due to the amount of extra addressing they have to do.

What video card should I get for my computer?

I have an hp G60 laptop with 64 bit windows 7. it has a 2.19 GHz Intel Celeron processor, so it's the video card that really needs to be upgraded. I really don't know what's what when it comes to video cards, so I'm trying to find something that's fairly inexpensive, but gets my wow framerate up past 10 :D|||You can NOT replace the video card on a g60 without replacing the motherboard too. VERY expensive proposition! Just like a car, the parts and the labor are MUCH more expensive than a preassembled unit.

With a celeron processor, there isn't going to be much improvement anyways. Sorry. A desktop for the same price could have gotten you much better gaming experience, AND it would have been upgradeable. But of course desktops have no mobility. My kids do all their gaming on custom xps DESKTOPS and use their laptops just for school.

You might consider putting more ramm into it. It has only 3G so it's not moving in dual channel mode. If you put in MATCHED pairs, you'll not only have more quantity but have dual channel so it will be a bit faster. That unit has a SLOW HD, you can upgrade it, but that's about all you can do for that machine.

Your video subsystem uses SHARED memory so make sure you shut down all unneeded applications. Of course, gamers NEVER put a P2P client on the same machine they game on. If you're at a KNOWN SAFE site or server, you can turn off antivirus and firewall. Just make sure to turn it back on.

You can get higher frame rate by turning down screen resolution and 3d effects. Do a trade off, juggle settings between the three possibilities until you find one that gives you the best results.

Good luck have fun.|||Basically in laptop You cant add graphics card because mostog graphics card are inbuilt

Some laptops have upgradeable graphic cards, some don't. Since you have a cheap processor in your laptop, I don't think there is a way to upgrade the graphics at all.|||Ummm usually on a laptop system, to get a video card that fits to the model of the laptop it will cost about 1/2 of what the laptop was, or more, thus it's usually better to buy a new laptop.

Two Windows 7 problems. Help please? Graphics Card and WoW issue.?

I just got Windows 7, and I had XP, so I couldn't directly upgrade with my files and stuff saved. So I did the .old thing and got most of my stuff back. Already downloaded all the programs and got the drivers for most of my stuffs. The only thing that I can't seem to get a driver to work for is my video card, and it's confusing because I'm able to use the computer. I have a Nvidia GeForce FX5200, and I have the FX driver for Vista on my computer. But each time I try to install it, it says "The Setup could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your hardware." I think, and the wizard closes. But I have the card in and everything, and on the device manager, there is a PCI Input Device that I can't get a driver for. The Video Card it says is in use right now is Standard VGA Graphics Adapter. I'm guessing that's the default something, and I thought it could be the card I have in now, but it only has 64 MB of built in memory. Research on google tells me that this card is supposed to have 128, and it should support Aero. But it doesn't. How do I get this card to work?

Also, WoW isn't working. It says it can't initialize the 3D accelerator, please check to make sure your video drivers are up to date and you have Direct X 9.0c installed. I have Direct X, but it still won't work. So, the problem prolly backtracks to the Video Card issue.

Thank you for any help you may be able to give me.|||If you have 7,why are you trying to use Vista drivers? I just went to the Nvidia site and they have the drivers for 7 available for download.Another thing too that will help you, update your motherboard drivers. If it's one that came with the computer, go to support on your computers website. If it's a motherboard you installed, go to their website.

I got your email but for some reason i couldn't reply.I checked the Nvidia site, you're right, they have it listed but when you click on it,it says not available,I didn't click on it before.

Try updating the motherboard drivers, uninstall the Nvidia drivers, reinstall but right click, click properties and use compatability mode for vista service pack 2.If that doesn't work, try vista service pack 1 or even try xp service pack 3.

Need advice for a new video card. Windows 7 64bit 8gig ram 2.4hz quad core. Have Geforce GTS 250.?

I'm told even with ugrading to Windows 7, you still need a card that supports Direct x 11. Computer upgrade to windows 7?

Hi, I have a Dell Dimension 200 currently running on XP. Computer: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.20GHz 2.19GHz, 1.25 GB of RAM. Only thing that was added was a DVD Writer and 1 GB of RAM. So as you can tell.. its pretty outdated, but never gave me problems and I never really liked Vista, but I did try updating it straight to Vista but my video card couldnt find the drivers for Vista and the resolution was all out of whack (didnt even bother to check if anything else worked). I think this will happen with 7, but I recently bought a laptop and would like to connect the two via homegroup. Can you tell me what I would need in order to upgrade to windows 7? whether its more ram, new video card/soundcard, etc, etc.. Please help.|||Download the Windows 7 upgrade advisor to find out if it is possible, it should run ok with your processor and ram, but you may have a problem with drivers so it`s best to check.

You will likely be advised to upgrade the ram, but i`ve run 7 with 1GB with no problems.|||Connecting a Windows 7 laptop to a XP machine can be quite annoying as XP has no part in Homegroup. You have to run the Network Setup Wizard on the XP machine and accept "file and printer sharing" when prompted, complete the wizard and reboot the PC.

To find the Network Setup Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections. Under Common Tasks on the left hand side, click Network Setup Wizard. This will allow your Windows 7 Laptop to see the XP machine and vice versa. Enjoy!|||Windows 7 should work with your old computer. I had problems with windows vista and my video drivers, but windows 7 worked wonderfully.

You can also connect the two machines without using the new homegroup feature.

About upgrading to Windows 7?

I'm thinking about upgrading to Windows 7 from Windows Vista. I have a few questions about Windows 7 though

1) My computer is an HP G60-235DX Notebook Laptop running a Pentium(R) Dual Core-CPU Processor. 3 GB of RAM with 287 GB hard disk space. I think the video card is a T4200 @ 2.00 GHz on a 32 Bit Operating system. Could my computer handle Windows 7 with this current setup?

2) I am currently running Windows Vista Home Premium Service pack two. Would it be worth it for me to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional? Also, what is the differences between Home Premium and Professional versions?

3) Is there any way for me to transfer my drivers, software and personal items that are on my computer without downloading them again or putting them on my 8 GB flash drive. I also have subscriptions to anti-virus software would I need to purchase another license because I have had 2 hard drive crashes so this would be my fourth time entering in that Product Key?|||Hi Ryan,

1) Your computer should be just fine to run Windows 7. If you'd like to take a look at system requirements for Windows 7 visit http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windo…

2) This choice is really one you have to make for yourself. Here is a comparison chart you can look through to see the difference between Windows Home Premium and Professional - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windo…

3) Since you are moving from Vista to Windows 7, you have the choice to do an in-place upgrade meaning your files, programs, and settings will remain intact. Here is a guide to help you through all steps of the upgrade - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windo…

Enjoy Windows 7!

Microsoft Windows Outreach|||I always tell all my clients that the rule of thumb is if the computer has been running Vista okay then windows 7 should work fine. I love windows 7. I have always hated Vista. Use an 8 GB or 16 GB flash drive and save all your stuff on it. Then when you get windows 7 installed you will be good to go.|||If I understand you correctly, you want to go FROM Windows 7 TO Vista? That's going backwards, my friend. You won't be upgrading, you will be downgrading. Windows 7 is more stable, more friendly, more easily used. But what you need to be sure about is whether you have 32-bit Home Premium or 64-bit Home Premium. You have to go to the same grade if you upgrade. You will HAVE to go to 32-bit or 64-bit, depending on what you currently have.

For instance, I have Vista Home Basic 32-bit. I can't go to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, without wiping my hard disk and starting over. I don't want to do that, so I'm stuck with what came with the computer. By next year, I'll be able to make the change, right now I can't. I hate Vista, it totally sucks. I think an earlier answerer gave you good advice about how to do this.|||Yes, windows 7 is faster than windows vista. Also windows 7 is more stabil and crashes less.

The different 7 versions have some other extra options at the install. A regular person would be fine with the home one, other people who play games and make software i.e. might want another version.

There is a way to upgrade your windows vista to 7 without reinstalling it. Don't got any experiences with that. I'd recommend you to put it on a flash drive or external hard disk.

Also, you might want to question yourself: Do i really need windows 7 or vista? XP can do most things 7 and vista can. So for most people, windows xp actually is the best choice. Since it's a lot faster.

Also, there are some cracked and tweaked windows versions available on the internet that are free and faster. Unattended windows 7 is an example.

Old computer with new video card(for games)?

I am going to buy a video card and i wanted to check if the 1 im gonna buy will work with my computer. The card is this http://www.scanmalta.com/eshop/1gb-gainw…

these are my system specs

processor : Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00 GHz 2.99GHz

Installed memory(RAM) 4.00GB (3.12GB usable)

System Type : 32-bit operating system.

my current video card is integrated ,I do have PCI but will my computer run slowly with this (i have windows 7) and will i have to upgrade my 230volt power supply if u need any extra info email me at jacquescaruana@hotmail.com (not at yahoo) and if possible how to get that info without going on website. p.s i will use the card for gaming as my current card cant run 2000 (year) games but all my other specs work.|||The GT 220 is an entry-level card and will not perform as well as older high-end cards like the 9800 or even an older mid-range card like the 9600. Use the video card benchmark website as a guide to help you compare which ones perform better for your budget.

It'll work as long as you have a PCI Express x16 slot. It won't fit a PCI Express x1 and x4 will not do.

The third link below is a Power Supply calculator by Asus. It'll help you determine which power supply is a minimum to run your new video card.|||That card is for PCI-Express.. You would first want to make sure that your computer has PCI-Express ports.. It probably does but just check.. If it does the video card should help a little, but your processor may need some updating soon!|||It probably will. I mean if you have Pentium D chances are you have a PCI E slot. You really should download something called CPU-Z, and check out what type of motherboard you have, then check to see if it has a PCI-E slot.

Anyhow, I suggest you look into a different card because 220 is really-really slow so you can't play games on it. If you're low on money, get a card from a previous generation like 9800 GTX or if that's too expensive try 9600 GT.|||I do not think this card will work with your system, I suggest that you take your computer info and video card info to best buy and ask them to make sure.

I would also look into upgrading your power supply, you need at least 100v over the video card to make sure you have the power for it to work.

Do some more research on the video card you may find that it takes 350v or higher

Windows doesn't see my video card anymore?

Here's my situation; I bought a used laptop from someone off of Craigslist. It had a nice video card in it, but I forgot to write down it's name. I recently installed a newer version of Windows, and it doesn't say I have that video card anymore. It says I have a standard vga card. Trying to update the driver doesn't work. There are no stickers on the laptop, and the guy I bought it from hasn't answered my calls.

Is there any way to find out what video card it is? If I open the laptop and look for it, will it say on the card? Or is there a website that can scan my pc and tell me? I look in the device manager under display adapters and all it says is standard vga graphics adapters.

I can't remember exactly the name of the card, it was something like nvidia geforce 9800gt but I'm not sure what letters came after the 9800 part. Is there any way I can get the laptop to detect the card?

Installing video card windows wont boot?

Hello I have my custom computer, i'm trying to put a AGP video card in but, everytime i do windows xp will not load and screen will just turn black. I know the agp video card is not defective because, it worked when windows 7 was installed and I tried 3 different agp video cards.

so try to load on ur previous card , then uninstall older drivers from XP , perform cleanup using Driver Sweaper , then plug in ur card and see if it works or not , if it works then install drivers for new card

if still no display , switch back to previous card , install drivers for new card , and then plug in new card

I need help finding a driver for a video card?

i have a sparkle fx 5200 graphics card a friend gave me but i cant find the drivers for it and i have a windows 7 computer, i heard that people got it to work on windows 7 i went on their website to find the driver (did not have driver cd) and downloaded the vista version hoping it to work but it did not anyone know which version to download or where?|||By the looks of things nVidia havent released drivers for that card which are designed for Windows 7.

I would suggest getting the Vista drivers for your card but make sure if you have 64 bit windows to get 64 bit drivers and the same goes for 32 bit windows.|||The driver package from nVidia most likely is not compatible with Windows 7. You can manually install the driver via Device Manager, which is built into Windows. The trick is to extract the driver files from the installer and then force Windows to use them, even it they are detected to be incompatible.

I have extracted the files for you and they can be downloaded from the following URL:

http://sites.google.com/site/pwdionline/

Your driver packages are are somewhat down the list. I had to split them into 5mb archives because of space restrictions.

1. Download the driver packages

2. Right click the first package and extract the archive contents (it will automatically pull from the rest of the archives)

3. Click START

4. Right click 'Computer' and select 'Properties'

5. On the top left, click 'Device Manager'

6. Expand the 'Display Adapters' and right click your graphics card (it might have a generic name)

7. Choose 'Update Driver Software'

8. Choose 'Browse My Computer for Driver Software'

9. Click the 'Browse' button

10. Navigate to where you extracted the driver package

11. Double click the driver INF file (might be called nv_disp)

12. Follow the prompts to install and restart your computer

Let us know if this works. If you need a 64-bit copy, email me at compelx@gmail.com

Thanks!|||Nvidia's website will have drivers that will work with 7. Nvidia has "unified driver architecture" so they have maximum compatibility with most mother boards and operating systems. If no exact match can be found try driver 174.14. That is the one I use.|||The "Wonders" of Windows 7- NOT Supporting Hardware as usual..As serious as can be, the ones who "got it to work" did you ask them? Frankly, you wouldnt be here if that was the case. Chances are- Windows 7 does NOT support you card or 95% of others. Generally when people have certain issues with 7 support the article below helps.Also- if the Vista Driver didn't work, (Vista and 7 are SAME format) [Kinda like Windows 2000 and NT.] I would look into Why it didn't?

Best of Luck|||If you can’t find the right drivers manually I would recommend just getting a software program that can do it for you. There is a program I use which will find drivers for just about all hardware devices. The best part is it takes a snapshot of your system specifications and matches the right driver to go with it. Perform a free driver scan at:

Also, you can get the driver from their official sites:

Is a 256mb video card good for FSX on windows 7 64bt?

Amount of video ram isn't the main thing to determine performance in games. However, the fact that it has so little, it must be a pretty old card and FSX is pretty demanding so I'm gonna say no, it's not adequate enough.|||No! only 32 bit

hi friends ..i am using HCL laptop with windows 7 ultimet operating system a few days ago i re installed windows 7 ultimet , i found that my aero theme effect was not working , it said

" The current video card may support Aero with a driver that is compliant with the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM). Contact the manufacturer of your computer or video card for a WDDM-compatible driver."

but it worked good before reinstalling it , and i even tried to update the video card in net by device manager but it said the video card is upto date....what shall i do...

( i am using windows 7 ultimet , on HCL notebook computer k38 PDC)|||It sounds like a problem with your drivers. Try completely uninstalling display drivers via device manager then go to your video card manufacturer's web site and download/install the latest drivers.|||Try this first...

Go to control panel ,, action center,,,troubleshooting and click display aero desktop effects..

Video card for older Dell Dimension, Windows 7, MCE?

I'm looking to get an older Dell Dimension 4600 pc I have to be a media center for a televeision that is HDTV but the only inputs I have are component, s-video, coax, and rca's. No vga or hdmi. I have a video card that Windows 7 see's and is using, but it has only vga, and dvi out. I bought a vga to component cable, but it has done me no good. I have no idea why. It displays nothing when connected to the tv. Can anyone give me some idea what i should / could do to get the display to the tv. I'm not interested in spending $100 on a video card to put into a 5 year old pc. Thanks!!|||You should have this if you have DVI out on the PC. You may need the latest video drivers for you computer. Make sure you get the complete drivers set which includes all the options to configure the output to your TV. Set the TV as screen 2 so you can see both outputs in the videocard driver software on your PC monitor at the same time.. VGA to your PC monitor and DVI to your TV.

Upgraded my computer from Windows XP to Windows 7 and have lost Outlook Express?

I just upgraded my computer from Windows XP to Windows 7 (also upgraded motherboard, CPU, RAM and video card). I eventually figured out that there is no more Outlook Express and I have lost a ton of important information I had saved in my Outlook folders. I told the Computer guys that I don't know much about computers and trusted them when they recommended I switch to Windows 7. I wish they had said something about losing Outlook Express but they didn't. I don't care about the emails that would have come in, but as I mentioned there were a lot of important things I had kept in some folders I made in there. Is there any possible way the computer guys can retrieve it, or any way I can retrieve it? The business was closed by the time I got home and I have to wait until tomorrow to ask, but it's killing me not knowing if is indeed possible for them to somehow find my folders. Thanks for all who reply.|||when your computer was upgraded from windows xp to windows 7, xp was removed because 7 doesn't support upgrades only clean installs and a clean install of 7 was performed not sure if anything's recoverable from the orginal xp install.|||For some reason, Microsoft didn't include it in Windows 7. You can download the current replacement, Windows Mail Live, from Microsoft.

Your mail files should still be intact, unless you reformatted the disk. The new app should be able to access them.

Actually, I suspect you could probably still download Outlook Express for XP and install it on Windows 7. Try poking around on download.microsoft.com.

Good laptop (windows 7 + dual core processor)?

i'm looking to buy a laptop that will mainly be used for internet and word documents etc, i would like to have a dual core processor...any ideas (must have windows 7)

this computer may also become my families 2nd computer so i also need a good video card....any ideas???|||I suggest the Hp pavilion dv4. I am answering this question with my own! It's a great laptop for internet and documents, music, etc. I bought mine before Windows 7 released =( but now they are updated with Windows 7. It would be a good family computer, it's normal, modern, and a good computer!|||Asus is the best, most reliable Laptop brand. If either for your parents or yourself I recommend checking them out. I found a nice Asus Laptop that is also good for other things such as gaming ect... Would make a good family Laptop if thats what you want it for. Here's a link to the page I found it at:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00352L…|||U could look for the "Compaq Presario CQ62Z series" on hp.com (base-price $379.99)

Then customize it to include (customized price: $599.99):

AMD Athlon(TM) II Dual-Core Processor for Notebook PCs N330 (2.3GHz, 1MB L2 Cache)

512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD545v Graphics [HDMI, VGA]

5-in-1 integrated Digital Media Reader

4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)

or

look on the same site for "G72t series" (base-price $599.99)

and add a 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5430 Graphics [HDMI, VGA] for $75

(this laptop has a big screen and an intel i3 cpu and also a free upgrade to 4gb)

or try a different combination with an as good a videocard as possible.

Note: When buying a laptop buy with upgrades in mind. It's very hard to upgrade a processor or graphicscard in a laptop but upgrading the memory often is quite easy. So best make sure u have the best graphics and cpu u can afford and have a user-accessable empty memoryslot for future memory upgrade. (also find out the maximum memory the laptop can hold) Getting a bigger hdd in the future also isn't to hard but u have the difficulty of moving the os to the new hdd then which can be a bit complicating because windows might need special drivers during installation. There are ways to copy an os though by using a partition imager like bootit-ng and an external usb2 hdd. So u can hold back on memory and hdd-size in your purchase and focus on cpu and graphics.

Good laptop for video and audio editing?

Hi, now I know that laptops are frowned upon in the video and audio industry. My problem is that I need the portability. Don't tell me a macbook pro because that's not in my price range. I have a budget of $800 max.

The problem with mine now is that when I go to edit, it plays the video back choppy, not just a little, real bad. It has an Intel Celeron processor, and 3 gigs of ram. Also I've attempted to do recordings via audio interface with this. I've been told by a couple people that Vista is basically doomed, and that it would make more sense to get Windows 7. I won't go into the problems I've had with that, but it won't install the drivers that I need for the interface, and programs (protools le) are not compatible with it.

You can either refer me to a particular laptop, or help me out with some guidelines for buying. Like I said, I edit HD video footage, and do audio recording. I will be using programs such as Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects. 3ds Max, and ProTools

I suck at knowing what to look for in computers. I know how to use them, but couldn't tell you the difference between an Intel i5 and i7 processor other than the number. I think hard drive speed and graphic cards might have something to do with playback issues, but I am not 100% PLEASE HELP!|||build your own, use a 5770 and AMD phenom II x4 955|||For Adobe CS5.5, don't speculate - check against Adobe's minimum system requirements, including tested and recommended graphics cards

if your really tight in budget, you can try neo laptops http://www.neo.com.ph/products_elan.aspx|||First of all, it's not true that laptops are frowned upon, because these days EVERYONE uses laptops for EVERY purpose.

Now, I don't know how much you know about computers, so I'll mention a few facts you should know.

RAM = basically how much information your computer can process at a time, so more RAM will let you render faster and use more big programs at once (Side Note: NEVER run an internet browser while rendering...just don't..). So 4 GB is a fair amount for the price range you're looking for, I would say; you can then get a 64-bit operating system for really no extra cost, which would let your programs run more quickly with more going on within them, if you would get the 64-bit versions.

Then there is the processor. That will allow your overall computer system to take on a bigger load, in a way....basically a processor with around 2.5 GHz is decent, and if you can get more than that, that's also great.

Another thing is the video card; you HAVE to have at least a decent graphics/video card in order for your videos, preview time, and render to all be better. What not to get: integrated graphics (anything Intel...). I'm pretty sure most machines that have ATI or Nvidia integrated graphics will serve you fine, but 1GB, if you can find it for your price, is absolutely MAGNIFICENT.

Now, the laptop itself, do NOT get HP. Terrible reviews, and I have one and it bugs the $%#$ out of me. I really like Dell, if you find a good one, and Alienware computers--if you can manage to find an affordable one--are absolutely gorgeous, dream-level machines...but expensive as hell.

About the operating system, I don't think you can find Vista computers these days...VIsta is messed up, and Windows 7 is basically what Vista SHOULD have been if it would have been done right, so you shouldn't have any problems.

I suggest you get a laptop with a bigger screen, say 15.4 if you want to balance portability with size. I have a 13" and it's not the greatest. It works just fine for me with programs like Vegas; I just have to squint a bit, but most of the time I just connect it to second screen, and stretch the program over two monitors so that I have plenty of working space.

Ummmm what elsee...Try to look for an alternative editing program from Premiere, simply because I personally despise it :P There are just some really great ones out there that I think provide better flexibility.

The most important thing, though, is to just look around and try to find information online and the more you look the more you understand the technicalities and so on. That's the way I learned, really.

OH and one last tip: if you're buying online, ALWAYS look up coupons for the company you're buying from online. You can get all kinds of discounts, especially near holidays.

Good luck!

Would it be advisable for me to upgrade from xp to windows 7?

Ok so like the title says, would it be a good idea to upgrade to windows 7?

My pc specs (minus the operating system)

Intel Core 2 Duo 8500 @3.16 GHZ

Nvidia 8600GT 512 MB Video card

I play pc games casually at the moment but plan on gaming more often with my pc, my pc has had issues that will require me to wipe and reinstall windows...someone told me it might be a good idea to upgrade to windows 7.

Games that I have at the moment

Gears of War (runs on max settings fine)

Battlefield 2 (runs on max settings, runs fine but audio is choppy)

Battlefield 2142 (runs max settings, runs fine but get lag spikes online)

Neverwinter Nights 2 (runs on max settings, lags quite often..I put the blame on bad programming)

Vampire Masquerade bloodlines (runs on max settings, runs fine)

Chrome specforce (runs on max settings, runs fine except audio is extremely fuzzy sounds like white noise.. game uses star forrce protection, I heard it can cause problems but dont know if its true if I can get a confirmation that would be good.

so yeah will I be able to run those games at the same quality?

also how will I handle games like Star trek online?|||it can be done, however are the games compatible?|||YES|||You might as well get windows 7. Yes you'll be able to run those games at the same quality. If anything your games might run a little better. 7 is good at prioritizing processes. Any new game will run with 7. And you'll easily be able to play Star Trek Online. If you can play crysis, you can play almost any other game.|||Yes. your computer meets the requirements of Windows, and you will have the same or even better game experience, coz 7 is the fast operating system on the world. Note that you can't directly upgrade from XP to Seven, you have to either upgrade to vista first or uninstall windows xp and format your disk. There is also software called PC Mover, which helps you directly install Windows 7 from XP, and keep your installed programs on Windows XP.

Video Card locking up computer? - Windows 7? Overheat?

Hi, Need some help from the pro's here. I just got a new slimline computer and put a video card in - BFG GeForce 210 512mb. Installed their drivers / and windows 7 went and pulled drivers automatically as well.

http://www.frys.com/product/6046258

Unfortunately my computer now locks up once a day randomly. Sometimes just browsing the web. I had bought a previous video card MSI VN210 as well and it also had the lock up problem. Anyone know what causes this?

Other info:

Running windows 7

Running dual 23" monitors

Using low profile card due to slimline case.

Thanks for your advice and help!|||Your computer's specs would help. ie. make/model, processor, ram, psu wattage etc. otherwise its all a bunch of guessing.

edit: From what I can tell you are trying to run a 300watt card with a 220 watt power supply. Check the minimum specs of the card and then re check the specs of your computer... I ain't no rocket scientist but thats gotta cause issues.|||Try to move the mouse (pointer) across the screen.

The Mouse Does Not Move

If the mouse does not move at all across the screen, press the <Alt> key once and then press the <Down Arrow> a few times.

* If there is no movement on the screen, then the system is probably frozen meaning that all programs are locked up. Press and hold the computer's power button for 5 seconds until the computer shuts off, and then start the computer.

1. Check all the recently installed hardware or software. If you've installed either a new hardware or software, you need to uninstall it. If the problem does not persist, then that hardware or software caused the freezing/crash.

2. Run the antivirus program in your computer. Computer lock ups happen suddenly. The antivirus program should be updated regularly. If you have no antivirus program, you can make use of the free programs online. Search the web for free antivirus program that you can use to check which caused the crash or freeze.

3. Remove spyware through spyware removal programs. If you've finished tip number two and you did not find any virus, then there might be spyware or adware in your pc. You can download software programs that remove spyware/adware or you can use the free spyware removal software programs online.

4. Check the hard drive space. Check drive C and you must ensure that free space is over 20%. If the disk space is quite low, it may be the cause of random lock ups.

5. Check if your pc is overheating. Lockups are also caused by overheating. Make sure that the fan inside the computer does not have any dust buildup; cooling problems are also among the causes. The temperature should be just within the prescribed limits. Observe extra care when cleaning the case of your computer.

6. Check the computer's hard disk. You need to ensure that the computer's logical structure is not corrupted. Go to 'My Computer' and right click the 'disc C'. Click on the 'tools' tab. Check 'yes' if a prompt appears to restart the computer. After startup, some problems are fixed automatically. But if problems persist, the hard disk may need to be replaced. Run the 'disk defragmenter' so that the computer will perform well. This is one way to ensure computer reliability.

7. Check the computer's memory. Lockups, freezing or crashing are also related to memory. If you find memory problems, re-seat the RAM. After you've re-seat it and the problem persists, you should replace it because it is already defective.

8. Advanced users can check for hardware problems. Make sure that you do this appropriately.

9. Update the drivers and Windows. Outdated components can sometimes cause freezing. You need to update these components regularly

Video card running hot at BIOS and Windows 7 start up?

I'm not quite sure what is going on but my computer crashed just yesterday, with a blue screen stating that it was dumping physical data and now I have an even bigger problem. Windows will not start up correctly and it takes an insanely long time for it to do anything. It starts up, but takes 5 minutes to get to a screen that says Welcome, and after that takes 10 minutes to get to a black screen where I can move the mouse around. The desktop itself may take another 30 minutes to show up with the task bar.

I unplugged everything inside the computer and reconnected it all. The only thing I noticed is that the video card itself seemed very hot after booting up for only 2 minutes and then starts to cool down after a long period of the black screen.

I would really not rather buy a new video card... it's been fine except for a few hiccups while playing high end games. Could the video card be the problem or is something wrong with the hard drive? Maybe Windows? I would format, but there's a few files I'd want to get off my desktop first... and I can't seem to get on any part of Windows to do this.

My build:

Intel Quadcore 2.4 GHz

GeForce 260XT

Windows 7 64 bit or Windows 7 32 bit??

I have a 4GB of RAM in my PC and a powerful Galaxy 9800GT 1GB Video Card..........should i go for Windows 7 64 Bit OS.........My main worry is that i have to buy all my games and softwares again for 64 Bit OS which Would prove to be much costlier on the other hand i m a regular user of Auto CAD 2008-2010 and games like GTA 4 Assasins Creed 2 Prototype........plz plz help me out????should i go go 64 bit OS or not?????????|||I would go with 64bits. With 32-bit Windows, you're stuck at 4GB of RAM which is the limit for the OS, and even then, you're only using about 3.3GB of it, give or take. With 64-bit, 4GB of RAM is the new minimum standard, and with 4GB, you can run tons of applications with zero slowdown. Windows 7 (and Vista for that matter) runs so beautifully with 4GB of RAM you'll wonder how you ever did with less. II wouldn't hesitate, as long as you have 4gb or more, you should be good to go.|||For most would-be Windows 7 users, a 64-bit version of Windows 7 is the right move. But if you don't have sufficient RAM (at least 4GB), or you rely on devices that don't have supporting 64-bit drivers, or you need to upgrade an existing 32-bit installation, 32-bit Windows 7 might be the better choice. A few editions of 64-bit Windows 7 provide a Windows XP Mode that solves some backward-compatibility problems, but it isn't a universal panacea. In speedy Q&A format, here's just what you need to know.|||if you have a quad core you have to go with a 64 bit operating system other wise the 32 bit will be unable to run with the processor. Most programs have a 64 bit today because most computers have quad cores.|||You can run 32-bit software on a 64-bit OS, so there shouldn't be an issue.|||stay with 32 bit until 2011|||yeah why not

try this see what microsoft say....|||Its not recommend to upgrade Netbooks that comes with Windows XP|||I would not recommend it

System 7 is more memory intensive that XP was, which was designed for computers running 10 years ago. System 7 has the following system requirements --

* 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32/64-bit processor.

* 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit).

* 16 GB available hard disk space

* DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.

Notice that you would have little to no RAM left after loading the OS (1GB=1024 MB) - which means you would be able to run the OS, but that's about it! For this reason alone, you should not upgrade.

XP on the other hand only requires 64 megabytes of RAM (128 recommended). This leaves the bulk of your RAM for other things like applications.

If you are looking to speed up your Netbook, you might want to consider some of the more recent Linux distributions. Ubuntu releases one specifically for netbooks that would most likely run faster than XP.

Good luck.

Mobo: Asus P5Q-E

Monitor: Acer H233H

GPU: Gigabyte HD 4850 1gb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

OS: Windows 7

Also is it possible to span my screen across the 3 displays for normal use and especially video gaming?|||You should be able to plug 2 monitors into the first video card and 1 monitor into the second. Then, you can use the ATi control panel and set it to use 3 monitors.

For games, I believe that your game will be running with the performance of 1 video card. So you won;t be getting very much performance out of 3 monitors (especially if they are big).

But, certainly, it's possible to do 3 monitors.

In DX 10 mode, the HD 4770 would be better:

The HD 5750 is a bit better than the HD 4770:

AND is also more future-proof and could excel in DX 11 mode in Windows 7.

Will a dell laptop running windows 7 function well on 2GB RAM?

I am getting a dell laptop that has windows 7 it includes 2GB RAM at 800 MHZ. It has a core duo processor. Will the laptop function for basic things such as email, internet and word processing? It also has a intergrated video card.|||yes it should run fine|||it should run fine if you just doing the basic things as you said.

but if you are going to do photoshop, illustrator, etc, you should expand the RAM into 3GB

and if you are going to install windows 7 64-bit, you should expand the RAM too (because the system requirement said that 2GB RAM is needed for windows 7 64-bit)|||Yes, it should likely run fine. You might need more RAM, etc., if you wanted to do serious Photoshop work or play games or something, but that's fine for things like you describe.
