I'd like to get it so that I can just click shutdown in the start menu and the entire computer shuts off on its own. Could this be a software problem or a hardware problem? I'm thinking its probably more of a hardware problem. Whichever case it may be how do I fix it? If it's a hardware problem is there a connection I might have missed that would be the culprit?
Here is the parts I bought for my desktop a couple of months ago, all are brand new, none used or refurbished:

I didn't include the monitor or keyboard I got because I know it is highly unlikely that either has to do with this problem, although I doubt that every single thing I listed above has anything to do with the problem, but if it is a hardware problem, then I know that something I listed above is the culprit, be it a wrong or missing connection or whatever.
Thank you for your help. I know this doesn't seem like a really big issue but I have forgotten on numerous occasions that my computer doesn't shut itself completely off on its own and I'd rather not have the computer on for huge lengths of time, whether or not it lessens the life of the computer.

I should also add that it does succesfully restart my computer every time on its own. And I've looked up on the gigabyte website and there are two revisions they list for my motherboard model number: rev 1.0 and rev 1.2 and the box that my motherboard came in says rev 1.1
How do I tell what revision my my motherboard is?
OK so I just opened up the case and took a look at the revision number on the motherboard itself and that also says 1.1 so I am emailing gigabyte about what bios I should update to.
I also checked the power supply and I did not see and switch or anything on it to switch to soft power down.|||Hi, the simplest way for you to check is to see if there are any 'x' or '!' in your device manager. If so, you will need to download and install more drivers. Specifically for your motherboard's API or Advanced Power Interface. This controls how your operating system interacts with your motherboard's firmware. You can usually find these drivers from your motherboard (Gigabyte) website.
Also, you mentioned downloading firmware updates such as BIOS updates. You can find this (motherboard revision) when the system boots up and shows you the POST but this may go too fast and disappears from the screen before you can even read it. It is better by actually looking on your motherboard for the revision number, it is usually etched right on the motherboard. Find and update your firmware. This usually helps with the API interface.
When the above things are done, don't forget to check for any Windows Updates as well and check the other options. The default settings usually doe snot automatically downloaded.
Good luck and I hope this helps.|||I hope that I was able to help. Thank you for your vote, I really appreciate it.

|||Could be a couple things but that tricky to figure out. I'm assuming by "will shutdown the operating system but the computer is still on" that Windows appears to shutdown and also the screen goes off or blank? I dont believe hardware can cause this at all but can only be narrowed down to two things and that is Windows or the BIOS. Windows is only appearing to shutdown but you have a process that refuses to stop but if that were the case you should see it still trying to shutdown so unlikely. The screen going blank should be the last thing after Windows is shutdown so I lean toward the BIOS being screwed up and not communicating properly with WIndows. Try this and might fix.. open the case and reset the CMOS and there's two ways but this is easiest, with pc powered off AND UNPLUGGED from wall remove the battery from the motherboard and wait for one minute, then replace the battery, plug power cord in outlet, bootup. Wait a minute and let everything that's suppose to start up do so. Now click "shutdown". EDIT: One thing I always do is check Event Viewer and check for any errors or warning right after it does something weird but if Windows is trully shutdown when this even happens there wont be a error or warning message
