I've browsed the web for a good while and have yet to come to a solid conclusion. I currently run a Windows Vista 32-Bit system (Home Basic, but I have a Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade that I have yet to reinstall since a system format) with a AMD Sempron LE-1250 processor that has the 64-bit instructions enabled. For what I do (Gaming, HD Video Editing, Image Editing, etc), the 4GB limit just isn't cutting it anymore, and I'm looking to upgrade to the Windows 7 64-bit version. Now first of all, I would like to know if it's possible to purchase the Upgrade DVD rather than the full install. Secondly, how would I go about upgrading necessary files required for the switch? I've heard I'd probably need to upgrade my BIOS, but I haven't a clue what that is/how to upgrade it.
I Also have installed on this machine:
ATI Radeon 4650 HD Graphics Card w/ 1GB Video memory
Gateway Motherboard Model MCP61SM2MA
Dual 2GB memory sticks (DDR2)
Thanks to anyone that can help!|||No, you wil have to do a fresh install. The upgrade version of windows 7 will not work. You will have t purchace the full version and wipe the hard drive clean.|||You would need to do a clean install of Windows. Make sure to back up anything you want to keep as a clean install will wipe out all the data you have.
You will be able to use your Windows 7 64-bit Upgrade DVD to do the complete install. Similar to Windows Vista, when you get to the installation screen that allows you to choose between Upgrade or Custom Install, press Custom Install. In order to do a Custom install, you must start the installer before Windows boot.
I hope this helps!|||unfortunately because the 64bit instruction set is so different to x86 its not possible to just to an upgrade you litrally have to wipe the whole harddrive and start again unless you want to screw around with a dual install. the bios upgrade isnt much of an issue it can be downloaded from the OEM and simply flashed.|||You have to clean install whenever moving between 32-bit and 64-bit.
I don't believe you can actually use the upgrade discs coming from anything lower than Home Premium Vista. If you install your Ultimate upgrade, you should be able to use the less expensive upgrade discs (but will still have to technically fresh install with them).|||You cant upgrade a 32bit to a 64bit. You must choose the Custom Installation option. After installing it will create a Windows.old folder of your folders/docs however you will need to re install programs.|||hi matt clancy, so you have looked around and you are wondering about if you should experiment with windows flavors so please allow me to explain the mistakes that microsoft did they were experimenting with so many picturals or pictures would go into a one inch square and it worked so good that they had to get it into the market before their competeter did it so without too much fore thought they released vista ( now believe me i loved vista) but vista was plequed with problems one was it had boot issues and it used way too much ram and so the computer froze especially if you had a slow computer and a small processor. but people like me wanted to install a 64gb with a 32gb motherboard so i have friends that are computer repairmen so i called up my old trusty friend and said hey i want to and i got the facts every computer that was sold just about had a 32gb motherboard so to do my upgrade i would have to have a 64gb motherboard so other than having a new motherboard, new processor, 4gb of new ram, and a new power unit no problem so how much is it going to set me back oh around $800.00 dollars. well when he said that i felt like i was on welfare i didn't have that kind of money well stick with your vista 32 gb then he said. good luck hope i was helpful to you
